I honestly don't know how I came across this beautiful, beautiful piece of music (link below).

I'm not the kind of person who listens to music all the time; I don't have 'buds'; or music on my phone; or a Spotify account. I can't bear music playing while I'm working (either at my editor job or at my jewellery bench). It distracts and irritates me, even if it's a song or artist that I actually like #gofigure

Okay, so maybe I'm weird

Basically, I can't listen to music 'in the background'. If I listen to music, it has to be the only thing I'm doing. And I'm either very happy, or very sad and trying not to be.

Ear-worms

I think it's because I get ear-worms really, really easily and it drives me nuts, especially when it's 3am and I turn over in bed half-asleep and BAM! Some stupid, irritating tune pops into my head. Not all ear-worms are bad or unwelcome, though. But those which aren't are rare, rare, rare.

That time when an ear-worm wasn't a bad thing

My cat Monty died in November 2020 and my heart ripped apart completely and utterly.

I only got through the first three months of grief thanks to the unlikely combination of Todrick Hall, BTS, and Harry Styles.

Yes yes, I know.

I'd get into bed clutching my phone, open YouTube and for the next hour or so, listen to three particular songs over and over and over again until I knew I could safely fall asleep without thinking of Monty. And when I inevitably woke up or stirred in the middle of the night, it would be one of these songs that would be stuck in my head for me to hold tightly onto and push away the grief.

I still do that some nights.

Aural overloading

I'm getting better at coping with more than one source of noise going on at a time. I even occasionally turn on the radio (well, I get Alexa to) while I'm working at my bench. But if I'm hammering or using my Dremel (or, much more rarely, my Foredom — which I rarely use because I loathe it) to polish or drill or whatever, Alexa gets the immediate instruction to cease and desist.

This means you can rest assured that when I'm making jewellery, every single piece has been created with my full, undivided attention, and I haven't inadvertently set fire to the curtains or whacked my thumb with a hammer.

So, for now: go listen.
